Complications of HIV
What is HIV?
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, especially the CD4 cells, which help fight infections. Without treatment, HIV can weaken the immune system and lead to serious health problems.
With early diagnosis and proper treatment, many people with HIV live long, healthy lives.
Why Can HIV Cause Complications?
When HIV is not well controlled, the immune system becomes weaker. This makes the body less able to fight infections and certain cancers. These problems are called complications of HIV.
Common Complications of HIV
1. Infections (Opportunistic Infections)
These infections occur more often or are more severe because the immune system is weakened.
Examples include:
Tuberculosis (TB)
Pneumonia
Oral or genital thrush (fungal infection)
Toxoplasmosis (brain infection)
Chronic diarrhea from intestinal infections
Symptoms may include:
Fever
Weight loss
Night sweats
Persistent cough
Chronic diarrhea
Severe headaches
2. Cancers
People with HIV have a higher risk of certain cancers, including:
Kaposi’s sarcoma (purple or brown skin lesions)
Lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes)
Cervical cancer
3. Neurological (Brain and Nerve) Problems
HIV can affect the brain and nervous system, leading to:
Memory or concentration problems
Confusion
Depression or mood changes
Numbness or tingling in hands and feet
4. Heart, Kidney, and Liver Disease
Long-term HIV infection or some medications may increase the risk of:
Heart disease
Kidney damage
Liver disease (especially in people with hepatitis B or C)
5. Weight Loss and Weakness
Advanced HIV can cause:
Severe weight loss
Muscle weakness
Fatigue
How Can Complications Be Prevented?
The most effective way to prevent complications is:
Taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) every day as prescribed
Attending regular clinic appointments
Having routine blood tests (viral load and CD4 count)
Getting recommended vaccinations
Eating a healthy diet
Avoiding smoking, excessive alcohol, and drug use
When Should You Seek Medical Help?
Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you have:
Persistent fever
Severe headaches
Difficulty breathing
Sudden weight loss
Confusion or changes in behavior
Any new or worsening symptoms
