PrEP for HIV prevention

What is PrEP?

PrEP is a daily pill (or an injection) that helps protect you from HIV. When taken correctly, it works very well—up to 99% effective.

Who should use PrEP?

You may need PrEP if you:
✔ Have a partner with HIV
✔ Have more than one partner or don’t always use condoms
✔ Recently had an STI
✔ Share needles or injection equipment

How do I take PrEP?

  • One pill every day at the same time

  • It takes 7 days to protect for anal sex and 21 days for vaginal sex or injection drug use

  • Do not stop without asking your doctor

  • Event based PrEP is used as an alternative to daily regime.

Before starting PrEP:

  • HIV test (must be negative)

  • Kidney test

  • Hepatitis B test

While on PrEP:

  • HIV test every 3 months

  • Kidney test every 6–12 months

  • STI check regularly

Side effects:

  • Most people have none

  • Mild nausea or headache may happen at first, usually goes away

Important:

  • PrEP does NOT protect against STIs or pregnancy—use condoms too

  • If you miss many doses, PrEP will not work well
